Lesson 2: Finding Your Purpose as an Author
Most people begin writing because they feel inspired. That spark matters, but it is not what carries a book to completion. Inspiration fades. Life interrupts. Doubt creeps in. What remains is purpose.
This lesson is about understanding why you want to write this book, not in a superficial or performative way, but in a way that will sustain you when the excitement wears off and the work becomes quiet and demanding.
Purpose is what guides your decisions when you are unsure what belongs in the book and what does not. It is what helps you choose a structure, a tone, and even a pace. Without it, writers often drift, overcomplicate, or abandon projects that once felt important.
Your purpose does not need to be impressive. It needs to be honest. Some authors write to make sense of something unresolved. Others write to teach, to preserve, to challenge, or to offer companionship through words.
When your purpose is clear, the book stops feeling like a vague dream and starts becoming a defined project. You are no longer writing to prove something. You are writing to serve something.
In this lesson, we slow down enough to articulate that purpose. Not as a promise to the world, but as an anchor for yourself.
Exercise: Your Author Purpose
Set aside 20–30 uninterrupted minutes. Write slowly and honestly. This exercise is not about finding the perfect words. It is about clarity.
Answer the following questions:
Why do I want to write this book now, at this point in my life?
What would feel unfinished or unresolved if I never wrote it?
What do I hope a reader will feel, understand, or reconsider after reading this book?
When the writing feels difficult, what truth or intention do I want to return to?
When you are finished, write one short paragraph beginning with: “I am writing this book because…”
This is not a statement for marketing or publishing. It is for you. You will return to it often.
